The Cursive Curse: An Update

Sixty-Five-Year-Old Man Takes Bar Exam

A few weeks ago I wrote that I was concerned about having to write out the Multistate Performance Test (MPT), rather than being able to use my computer. Last week I gave that issue more thought. The letter to applicants I received, which addressed the use of computers on the exam, stated that computers could only be used on the essay portion, the Multistate Essay Exam. The MPT is part of the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), which North Carolina began using only this year. Perhaps the letter simply had not been updated to mention the MPT. I inquired of Board of Law Examiners staff and was glad to receive a reply that apparently I was correct — computers may be used on the MPT. I am relieved not to worry whether the graders can read my essays. Using a laptop with a touchpad is substantially different than using a standard desktop keyboard, however, so I will be increasingly practicing my essays and MPT responses on my notebook computer.

I’ve been working with my bar review course for just over a month, and I appear to be on target with course goals so far.
